According to the Mercer Cost of Living survey for 2007 Munich is still the most expensive city in Germany and has risen to 39th most expensive city in the world from 61st last year. Frankfurt is just behind at 40th with Berlin at 45th equal with Düsseldorf (62nd last year).
Mercer’s annual Cost of Living Survey covers 143 cities across six continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. It is the world’s most comprehensive cost of living survey and is used to help multinational companies and governments determine compensation allowances for their expatriate employees. It is distinct from Mercer Quality of Life survey which places Munich in 8th position below Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.
